January 23, 2025 is a historic day for Thailand when the Marriage Equality Act comes into effect. Same-sex couples can legally register their marriage. To ensure a smooth registration, how should couples prepare? Let’s find out. 

Equal Marriage Registration

What do I need to do to register my marriage?

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must not be judged or deemed insane or incompetent.
  • Not siblings of the same father and mother, or only the same father and mother
  • Not parents and adopted children
  • No spouse, but if previously registered for marriage and divorced. Must have been separated from previous marriage by no less than 310 days. Unless having given birth or having a certificate stating that she is not pregnant or having a court order, or having registered for marriage with the previous partner.

Documents required for marriage for Thai people

  • Original ID card that has not expired
  • Prenuptial agreement (if any)
  • If underage (20 years old). A parental consent letter and a signed copy of the parent’s ID card are required.

  • Certificate of single status issued by the embassy with translation
  • Original passport that has not expired
  • Prenuptial agreement (if any)
